I can't believe I just found this census. I have been searching for this record practically all semester while in family history class. There were a couple mistakes made by the transcriber, which probably was the reason I couldn't find them. 1. Flora's name on the census is Laura 2. On ancestry it says the BrinCkerhoff family with a 'c' or the BAinkerhoff with an 'a'.

I'm so glad I found them and now know where they were in 1920... St. Louis, Missouri.

James Calvin Brinkerhoff Census Records

James Calvin (49) lived until 13 July 1946, since the 1940 census was destroyed, I first searched the 1930 census. I found that he was the head of the house and lived in St. Louis Missouri with his wife Flora Ellen Dain (45) and four children; Madge (22), James M (14) and Howard W (13). His occupation at the time was a Mill Wright in the Foundry industry.

I couldn't find anything for the 1920 census, but searched Evert V. Pearson because in 1910, James Calvin and his family lived with Evert, his brother-in-law.

In the 1910 census, James Calvin and his family lived in Indiana with Evert V. Pearson (32) and his family; Netter F. Pearson (30), Walter D. Pearson (2) and Genevieve Pearson (8 months). In 1910 James Calvin and Flora Ellen had another child living with them, Myra Lucille (1), but she passed away soon after.

In 1900, James Calvin was living on the United States military base; Sancti Spiritus Barracks, Cuba, Military and Naval Forces. James was 20 years old at this time. He was a private in the infantry in the "K" company and 2nd Region.

James Calvin Brinkerhoff

James Calvin Brinkerhoff was born 29 Oct 1880 in Seward, Seward, Nebraska. He married Flora Ellen Dain on 5 July 1906 in Muncie, Delaware, Indiana. He died 13 July 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri. Flora Ellen Dain was born 18 Jan 1885 in Edgar, Illinois and died 10 Dec 1977 in Provo, Utah. Sarah's parents were George Kasson Dain and Hannah Orilla Sutton. James Calvin and Flora had 4 children.

James Calvin Brinkerhoff was born on the 29th of October 1880 in Seward, Seward, Nebraska. His father James worked as a mill wright in the foundry business. James Calvin had 5 siblings. He was married to Flora Ellen Dain on the fifth of July 1906 in Muncie, Delaware, Indiana.
In 1918, three years after the birth of my grandfather James Marcus Brinkerhoff, James Calvin and his wife Flora Ellen moved to St. Louis Missouri. They lived in a cold-water “flat” with an outside toilet. Flora had to heat the water to wash the clothes and for James Marcus to take baths in a copper boiler. James Calvin worked for Warner Gear Co. in Muncie, Indiana before the move, and now was employed making Marmon cars. Later, James Calvin, worked in maintenance for United Drug Co., predecessor of Rexall Drug.
James Calvin was a Spanish American War Veteran and belonged to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Organization. When the troops came back from World War I in 1919, James Calvin took his son James Marcus to see the parade of returning troops.
In 1921, tragedy struck the family of James Calvin. His daughter Myra Lucille contracted typhoid fever and died soon after. James was heartbroken because Lucille had been “the apple in his eye.”
James Calvin and Flora Ellen had converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints while in Indiana. After the move to Missouri, the Brinkerhoff family attended the then tiny St. Louis branch. The Church was held in a rented German gymnasium. Flora’s brother Moses Dain and his wife Anna and their children attended also, along with Flora’s sister Nettie. Nettie’s husband, Everett Pearson, was not a member, but their children attended off and on.
In the early 1920s the Brinkerhoffs and the Pearsons rented an old mansion, which became known in the family as ‘The House on the Hill.” It was situated on a hill above a large abandoned quarry overlooking Broadway Ave. and the Mississippi River.
James Calvin’s children, Wayne and James Marcus would often play down by the quarry and swim in the river. Often the two boys would be close to drowning because neither knew how to swim.
Years later, the Church bought a small building from a defunct congregation at 5195 Maple Ave. The Brinkerhoff family attended church at this building for many years to come. James Calvin served as branch president for a total of 16 years. Because of James’ calling he often met with mission presidents and general authorities. Heber J. Grant once met with James and the small St. Louis branch and told stories about his youth. He shared with them his creed, “That which you persist in doing, eventually becomes easy, no that the nature of the thing has changed, but your ability to do has increased.”
Around 1926 the Brinkerhoffs moved to the Forest Park area and lived there until 1927. On September 29, 1927 a tornado struck the St. Louis area, stopping all public transportation. The kids were in school and James Calvin had to walk 8 miles home from work. Flora Ellen was shopping downtown and had to walk 6 miles to get home. The family’s second floor flat was missing it’s roof, shards of glass were everywhere and all the clothes had been sucked out of the closets.
James Calvin passed away on the 13th of July 1946 in St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri. He died of prostate cancer. He was being seen at the Veteran’s hospital because he was a veteran of the Spanish-American war. He was wounded in action when he was shot in the “buttocks!”

Hendrick Brinkerhoff was the son of Jacobus Hendricks Brinkerhoff and Angenitie Banta. Hendrick Brinkerhoff was baptized on 29-Oct-1710. Hendrick Brinkerhoff was born on 1-Nov-1710 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. Hendrick Brinkerhoff was born on 1-Nov-1710 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey; brop bap. He married Elisabeth Kip, daughter of Nicasius Kip and Antie Breyant, on 19-Nov-1731 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. Hendrick Brinkerhoff died in 1760 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey.

Jacobus Hendricks Brinkerhoff

Jacobus Brinkerhoff, like his father, Hendrick, and his grandfather, Joris, was a man of high character and standing in the community in which he lived. At the death of his father, he and his brother Dirck took the paternal homestead upon the Hackensack, where he resided until his death. He was a county magistrate, an elder of the church (of which all his family were members), and a man of mark in all the relations of life. In a stone, in the center of the church at Hackensack, his name is cut in bold letters as one of its early founders.

He married Agnitie Banta, daughter of Hendrick Banta, April 17, 1708 in Hackensack, New Jersey. They had five children.

Children:
Hartman: born May 1, 1709.

Jacobus Hendricks Brinkerhoff was the son of Hendrick Jorisen Brinkerhoff and Claesie Cornelils Bogert. Jacobus Hendricks Brinkerhoff was baptized on 29-Mar-1685 at Ridgefield Park, Bergen County, New Jersey. He married Angenitie Banta, daughter of Hendrick Epkese Banta and Maritje Lubbertse Westervelt, on 17-Apr-1708 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. Jacobus Hendricks Brinkerhoff died in 1770 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey.

Hendrick Jorisen Brinkerhoff

Hendrick married Claasie Boomgaert, daughter of Cornelius Boomgaert, and settled in Hempstead, Long Island, where he remained until his removal to New Jersey during the Revolutionary War.

In 1677 he purchased a tract of land in Bergen, now part of Jersey City, which, after his death became the residence of his widow and his son Cornelius, and on this tract some of his descendants still reside.

In 1679, he joined with a few other Dutchmen from Bergen and purchased the Indian title to the site of what is now Passaic City, but soon afterwards disposed of his interest there, and subsequently purchased of Hendrick Epske Banta, by deed bearing the date June 17, 1685, the farm upon the Hackensack, just below the present Ridgefield Park Station, on the West Shore Railroad, and formerly known as old Hackensack, upon which he resided until his death, and which remained in the family until 1878.

In "Early Settlers of Kings County," page 49, it is stated as follows: "Hendrick Jorise married Classie Cornelise Boomgaert of Bougoert, of Middlewout (Flushing). Name on Indian deed of Flushing of 1670, and on Assembly roll of 1675. Member of the Hempstead Assembly of 1665, from Flushing, and a magistrate of said town in 1662-'63 and '73. Removed from Flushing to the eastern  branch of the Hackensack River, N.J., where he bought land June 17, 1685.  His descendants in New Jersey sometimes write their names Blinckerhoff. Issue: Susanna: baptized January 1661; married Roelof Von Der Linde, of Hackensack. Cornelius married Algie Vreeland, and resided at Hackensack. Dirck of Hackensack married Margaret Siba Banta; and Jacobus of Hackensack, baptized March 29, 1685, married Angenietye Banta."

In a book entitled "Hudson County (N.J.) Land Titles," page 136, it is stated "The Dutch West India Company deeded (Lot No. 13 on map) to Jan Evertse Bout and he to Michael Jansen. Jansen's widow, Fitjie Hartmans, sold to Claes Jansame, May 30, 1667, to Hendrick Jorise Van Blinkerhoef; he conveyed it to his son Cornelius, February 24, 1708."

This seems to have been his first purchase in New Jersey, and to this property his widow and his son Cornelius removed after his death. He had five children, of whom we have historic record, but some accounts name a sixth child, a daughter named Gertie, born February 20, 1670, which is probably correct, and that the child died in infancy.

Children:
Margrietje: born June 13, 1671.
Cornelius: born 1673; died September 1, 1770.
Joris: born 1673; died February 5 1692.
Dirck
***Jacobus: (Born March 29, 1685) baptized March 29, 1685; died September 1, 1770.

The Family of Joris Dircksen Brinckerhoff- 1638

Joris Dircksen Brinkerhoff, the founder of the American branch of the Brinkerhoff family, came from the Province of Drenthe, in the Netherlands, and having lived for some time at Flushing, in the Province of Zealand, emigrated to the New Netherlands (now New York) in 1638, and settled upon a farm within the present limits of the city of Brooklyn, where he resided until his death, January 16, 1661.

He married Susanna Dubbels, and all his children were born in Holland.

In a book entitled, "The Early Settlers of Kings County," it is stated that "Joris Dircksen Brinckerhoef arrived in 1638. He settled on Staten Island, and entered into a contract with Cornelius Melyn, the owner of the island, to reside there; but owing to the murder of some of the neighboring planters by the indians in 1641, he obtained a release from the contract August 15, 1641. He went to Long Island and settled in Brooklyn. He died January 16, 1661.

From other sources it would seem that Cornelius Melyn, mentioned above, was the son-in-law of Joris, and the first husband of Altie. After his death she married William Covenhoven.

Children:
Dirck: killed by Indians on Staten Island.
***Hendrick: born 25 February 1629 and died 24 February 1708.
Abraham: born 1632 and died about 1714.
Altie: married William Covenhoven.
